The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is reminding residents that the REAL ID requirement takes effect on May 7, 2025. Starting then, anyone 18 and older will need a REAL ID or another federally issued ID, like a passport, to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.
REAL IDs have been available since 2019, but 1.6 million Tennesseans are still not compliant. To avoid last-minute crowds, officials urge residents to get their REAL ID soon. Applications must be made in person at a Driver Services Center or participating County Clerk.
To apply, bring original documents proving citizenship or legal presence, your Social Security Number, and two proofs of Tennessee residency. The cost is $28 for a REAL ID, with additional fees if obtained outside your renewal period. Regular licenses will still be valid for driving and general identification.
